What Portugal asks for specifically

Portuguese passports and the Cartão de Cidadão are issued by the Instituto dos Registos e do Notariado, with consular posts applying the same rules abroad. Two identical photographs are required, not one.

The one people get wrong
Portugal allows a photograph up to a YEAR old, where most of Europe insists on six months. And the Cartão de Cidadão is not the same photo as the passport: the citizen card takes a 32×32 mm square, while the passport asks for a photo “adequada ao modelo do passaporte” — the ICAO 35×45 mm this page is set to. One photograph does not serve both documents.
Background
Plain, clear and light — a white or light-coloured wall is the official suggestion — with the face visible and centred.
Glasses
Dark sunglasses are not accepted. The face must not be obscured by glasses, hats or any accessory.
Head coverings
The head must be uncovered for the Cartão de Cidadão, and nothing may cover the face on either document.
Expression
Look straight at the camera with a neutral expression.

Getting the head size right

Head height is the measurement most photos fail on, and it is not the same as “how much of the frame your face fills”. It runs from the top of the head — the crown, not the top of your hair if it stands up — down to the bottom of the chin. For Portugal that is 31.5 to 36 mm on a 45 mm tall photo, leaving the rest as space above the head and below the chin. The maker draws that band on screen while you position the photo, so you can see whether you are inside it before you export.

One photo, several countries

35×45 mm with a light grey background and the same head range is also what 7 other destinations we cover publish — so the photo you make for Portugal is normally usable for them too:

Sizes match, but each authority still sets its own rules on things like glasses, head coverings and how recent the photograph must be. Check the portal you are submitting to.

Printing a Portugal photo at home

At 35×45 mm you get 8 copies on a single 4×6 in (10×15 cm) print, which is the cheapest size at almost every print counter and photo kiosk. Export at 300 DPI (413×531 px) for printing; some portals accept or prefer 600 DPI (827×1063 px) for digital submission. Cut along the guides with a straight edge rather than scissors — a crooked border is a surprisingly common reason for a photo to be handed back.

Frequently asked questions

What size is a Portugal photo?

35×45 mm — that is 1.4×1.8 inches, or 413×531 pixels at 300 DPI. The background must be light grey.

How big should the head be in a Portugal photo?

Between 31.5 mm and 36 mm from the crown of the head to the bottom of the chin, which is 70–80% of the 45 mm photo height.

How many Portugal photos fit on a 4×6 print?

8 copies at 35×45 mm. The maker lays them out on a 4×6 in sheet with cutting guides, so one cheap print gives you a full set.

Is my photo uploaded to a server?

No. Cropping, background replacement and export all run inside your browser, so the photograph never leaves your device. There is no account and nothing to delete afterwards.
