What Norway asks for specifically
Norwegian passports and national ID cards are handled by Politiet, the police. Their quality requirements are unusual in two ways, and both catch people who prepared a photo in advance.
- The one people get wrong
- You do not bring a photograph. The picture is taken in the biometrikiosk at the police station — “bildet skal tas i biometrikiosken” — and the same applies to children. What follows is what the kiosk photo has to achieve, which is worth knowing before you arrive rather than after.
- Glasses
- Glasses are not permitted at all — “briller og hodeplagg skal ikke benyttes”. Not merely untinted or unreflective: no glasses. Take them off before you are photographed.
- Head coverings
- Head coverings are likewise not used, except on religious grounds or particular circumstances such as illness, and only where the person is expected to wear the same covering at future border checks. It must not cover any part of the face, nor more of the head than necessary, and must not be tight enough to change the natural shape of the face.
- Expression
- Both eyes, both eyebrows and the ears must be fully visible — hair tucked behind the ears — with the gaze on the lens, a neutral expression and the mouth closed. The head should fill about 70% of the picture. Scarves, bags and outer clothing come off before the photo.

Getting the head size right
Head height is the measurement most photos fail on, and it is not the same as “how much of the frame your face fills”. It runs from the top of the head — the crown, not the top of your hair if it stands up — down to the bottom of the chin. For Norway that is 31.5 to 36 mm on a 45 mm tall photo, leaving the rest as space above the head and below the chin. The maker draws that band on screen while you position the photo, so you can see whether you are inside it before you export.
One photo, several countries
35×45 mm with a light grey background and the same head range is also what 7 other destinations we cover publish — so the photo you make for Norway is normally usable for them too:
Sizes match, but each authority still sets its own rules on things like glasses, head coverings and how recent the photograph must be. Check the portal you are submitting to.
Printing a Norway photo at home
At 35×45 mm you get 8 copies on a single 4×6 in (10×15 cm) print, which is the cheapest size at almost every print counter and photo kiosk. Export at 300 DPI (413×531 px) for printing; some portals accept or prefer 600 DPI (827×1063 px) for digital submission. Cut along the guides with a straight edge rather than scissors — a crooked border is a surprisingly common reason for a photo to be handed back.
Frequently asked questions
What size is a Norway photo?
35×45 mm — that is 1.4×1.8 inches, or 413×531 pixels at 300 DPI. The background must be light grey.
How big should the head be in a Norway photo?
Between 31.5 mm and 36 mm from the crown of the head to the bottom of the chin, which is 70–80% of the 45 mm photo height.
How many Norway photos fit on a 4×6 print?
8 copies at 35×45 mm. The maker lays them out on a 4×6 in sheet with cutting guides, so one cheap print gives you a full set.
Is my photo uploaded to a server?
No. Cropping, background replacement and export all run inside your browser, so the photograph never leaves your device. There is no account and nothing to delete afterwards.
