Poland sizes the head from the chin to the EYES, with tolerances in an annex to its official instruction, not from the crown. The band shown is the generic European one.
These figures were checked against an official or widely-cited source. Portals occasionally change their rules, so confirm on the page where you submit.
What Poland asks for specifically
Polish passports and identity cards share one photo standard, published on gov.pl with a detailed instruction for photographers behind it.
- The one people get wrong
- The background must be WHITE and evenly lit — not the light grey used for a Schengen visa photo. Poland also sizes the head in a way nobody else does: from the chin to the EYES, with the tolerances set out in an annex to the official instruction, rather than from the crown.
- Background
- White, uniformly lit, free of shadows and of any decorative element.
- Glasses
- Glasses with dark lenses are not allowed, nor is anything else that makes the face harder to recognise.
- Head coverings
- No head covering, on the same principle — nothing that impedes identification.
- Expression
- A natural facial expression with no gestures and the mouth closed. The photo must show the whole head from the crown down, plus the upper part of the shoulders.
- Exceptions
- The photograph must have been taken no more than six months before the application.

Getting the head size right
Head height is the measurement most photos fail on, and it is not the same as “how much of the frame your face fills”. It runs from the top of the head — the crown, not the top of your hair if it stands up — down to the bottom of the chin. For Poland that is 31.5 to 36 mm on a 45 mm tall photo, leaving the rest as space above the head and below the chin. The maker draws that band on screen while you position the photo, so you can see whether you are inside it before you export.
One photo, several countries
35×45 mm with a white background and the same head range is also what 8 other destinations we cover publish — so the photo you make for Poland is normally usable for them too:
Sizes match, but each authority still sets its own rules on things like glasses, head coverings and how recent the photograph must be. Check the portal you are submitting to.
Printing a Poland photo at home
At 35×45 mm you get 8 copies on a single 4×6 in (10×15 cm) print, which is the cheapest size at almost every print counter and photo kiosk. Export at 300 DPI (413×531 px) for printing; some portals accept or prefer 600 DPI (827×1063 px) for digital submission. Cut along the guides with a straight edge rather than scissors — a crooked border is a surprisingly common reason for a photo to be handed back.
Frequently asked questions
What size is a Poland photo?
35×45 mm — that is 1.4×1.8 inches, or 413×531 pixels at 300 DPI. The background must be white.
How big should the head be in a Poland photo?
Between 31.5 mm and 36 mm from the crown of the head to the bottom of the chin, which is 70–80% of the 45 mm photo height.
How many Poland photos fit on a 4×6 print?
8 copies at 35×45 mm. The maker lays them out on a 4×6 in sheet with cutting guides, so one cheap print gives you a full set.
Is my photo uploaded to a server?
No. Cropping, background replacement and export all run inside your browser, so the photograph never leaves your device. There is no account and nothing to delete afterwards.
