What India e-Visa asks for specifically
The e-Visa photograph is checked by the Bureau of Immigration through the government’s own portal at indianvisaonline.gov.in. It is uploaded rather than printed, so the rules are about the file as much as the face.
- The one people get wrong
- No spectacles. The portal states the photo must show the face "eyes open and without spectacles" — so unlike a British or Italian photo, you take your glasses off even if you wear them daily. The image must also be a perfect square: "the height and width of the Photo must be equal". A standard 35×45 mm passport photo is the wrong shape and will be rejected on upload.
- Background
- Plain light-coloured or white, with no shadow on the face or on the background, and no border around the image.
- Expression
- Full face, front view, eyes open. Centre the head in the frame and show the whole head, from the top of the hair to the bottom of the chin.
- Exceptions
- JPEG only, between 10 KB and 1 MB. Files outside that range are refused by the upload form rather than by a person, so it is worth checking before you start the application.

Getting the head size right
Head height is the measurement most photos fail on, and it is not the same as “how much of the frame your face fills”. It runs from the top of the head — the crown, not the top of your hair if it stands up — down to the bottom of the chin. For India e-Visa that is 30.6 to 40.8 mm on a 51 mm tall photo. The maker draws that band on screen while you position the photo, so you can see whether you are inside it before you export, and keeps the exported file under 1 MB.
Printing a India e-Visa photo at home
At 51×51 mm you get 4 copies on a single 4×6 in (10×15 cm) print, which is the cheapest size at almost every print counter and photo kiosk. Export at 300 DPI (600×600 px) for printing; some portals accept or prefer 600 DPI (1205×1205 px) for digital submission. Cut along the guides with a straight edge rather than scissors — a crooked border is a surprisingly common reason for a photo to be handed back.
Frequently asked questions
What size is a India e-Visa photo?
51×51 mm — that is 2.0×2.0 inches, or 600×600 pixels at 300 DPI. The background must be white, and the file must be under 1 MB.
How big should the head be in a India e-Visa photo?
Between 30.6 mm and 40.8 mm from the crown of the head to the bottom of the chin, which is 60–80% of the 51 mm photo height.
How many India e-Visa photos fit on a 4×6 print?
4 copies at 51×51 mm. The maker lays them out on a 4×6 in sheet with cutting guides, so one cheap print gives you a full set.
What is the file size limit for a India e-Visa photo?
1 MB. The exported JPEG is kept under that limit automatically, so you do not have to compress it yourself afterwards.
Is my photo uploaded to a server?
No. Cropping, background replacement and export all run inside your browser, so the photograph never leaves your device. There is no account and nothing to delete afterwards.
