Greece publishes the FACE height, chin to forehead, as 50–60% of the photo — it excludes the crown, so this band reads a little small against a crown-to-chin guide.
These figures were checked against an official or widely-cited source. Portals occasionally change their rules, so confirm on the page where you submit.
What Greece asks for specifically
Greek passports are issued by the Hellenic Police through the National Passport and Secure Document Centre, which publishes its own technical specification rather than deferring to the generic European one.
- The one people get wrong
- Greece does not use the 35×45 mm photo the rest of Schengen does — it asks for 40×60 mm, without a frame. A standard European passport photo is simply the wrong size here. The background is specified to the exact shade: light, preferably grey at RGB (190, 190, 190) ± 10.
- Background
- Light, preferably grey at RGB (190;190;190) ±10 — one of the few authorities anywhere to name an exact value rather than describe a colour.
- Glasses
- If you normally wear glasses you must wear them in the photograph. Dark glasses or sunglasses are accepted only for medical reasons, frames must not obstruct the eyes, and reflections have to be eliminated by the lighting angle.
- Head coverings
- A head covering may be worn for religious reasons, provided the features from the jaw up to the forehead and from one ear to the other remain visible.
- Expression
- Neutral, without a smile, both eyes normally open — not wide open — and the mouth closed. The frame runs from the base of the shoulders to the top of the hair, filling 70–75% of the photo, with the chin-to-forehead distance at 50–60%.
- Exceptions
- The photograph must be in colour and taken within the last six months. A digitally printed photo has to be produced at 1200 dpi or better.

Getting the head size right
Head height is the measurement most photos fail on, and it is not the same as “how much of the frame your face fills”. It runs from the top of the head — the crown, not the top of your hair if it stands up — down to the bottom of the chin. For Greece that is 30 to 36 mm on a 60 mm tall photo, leaving the rest as space above the head and below the chin. The maker draws that band on screen while you position the photo, so you can see whether you are inside it before you export.
Printing a Greece photo at home
At 40×60 mm you get 4 copies on a single 4×6 in (10×15 cm) print, which is the cheapest size at almost every print counter and photo kiosk. Export at 300 DPI (472×709 px) for printing; some portals accept or prefer 600 DPI (945×1417 px) for digital submission. Cut along the guides with a straight edge rather than scissors — a crooked border is a surprisingly common reason for a photo to be handed back.
Frequently asked questions
What size is a Greece photo?
40×60 mm — that is 1.6×2.4 inches, or 472×709 pixels at 300 DPI. The background must be grey (rgb 190,190,190).
How big should the head be in a Greece photo?
Between 30 mm and 36 mm from the crown of the head to the bottom of the chin, which is 50–60% of the 60 mm photo height.
How many Greece photos fit on a 4×6 print?
4 copies at 40×60 mm. The maker lays them out on a 4×6 in sheet with cutting guides, so one cheap print gives you a full set.
Is my photo uploaded to a server?
No. Cropping, background replacement and export all run inside your browser, so the photograph never leaves your device. There is no account and nothing to delete afterwards.
