Frequently asked questions
What is a PDF overlay for?
Putting one PDF on top of another. The common cases are company letterhead behind an invoice or letter, a pre-printed form background under typed content, and a stamp page such as DRAFT, PAID or CONFIDENTIAL applied across a document.
How is this different from Watermark?
Watermark adds text or an image. This takes a whole PDF page as the stamp, so vectors, embedded fonts and transparency come through exactly as they were designed — a real letterhead rather than a picture of one.
Can I put the overlay behind the page instead of on top?
Yes. Behind only shows through where the page is genuinely transparent, though — many PDFs paint a solid white rectangle before anything else, and nothing behind that will be visible. On those, put the overlay on top and lower the opacity instead.
Can I apply a different overlay page to each page?
Yes. Choose "Page for page" and the overlay is matched to the document page by page, cycling if the overlay has fewer pages. The default uses the overlay’s first page on every page.
Are my files uploaded?
No. Both PDFs are opened and combined inside your browser, so neither the document nor the letterhead ever reaches a server. That matters here more than on most tools — letterheaded invoices and stamped contracts are exactly the files people should not be uploading.
Will it work on a password-protected PDF?
Not directly — unlock it first with our Unlock PDF tool, then overlay it.

Put your letterhead back on a PDF
Some documents arrive plain and have to go out on headed paper — an invoice from your accounting software, a letter from a template, a form that needs the pre-printed background it was designed for. Until now that meant printing it, or paying for desktop software. Overlay PDF lays one PDF over another: the letterhead, the background, or a stamp page such as DRAFT or PAID, applied across the whole document or only the pages you name. It takes a whole PDF as the stamp rather than a picture of one, so the vectors, the embedded fonts and the transparency all come through exactly as they were designed — which a watermark image cannot do. You can put it on top at any opacity, or behind the page where the page allows it. Both files are opened and combined inside your browser, which matters more here than almost anywhere else: a letterheaded invoice is precisely the document you should not be uploading to a stranger.
